IRL Indycar Champcar

DAY SIXTY-EIGHT

This weekend the Indy Racing League kicks off its season,When i see these cars,i can only think one thing, shame about Cart, how could such a great series be broken up by little men with big egos...

In the 90's i made model cars for teams and drivers, did a bunch for Ganassi,Green,Hall et all.
This one was for my own pleasure,i must have been a masochist,i think i've loosend up a bit since then...

one off,Reynard 96I,1/24th
as with my paintings this model is for sale, just ask...

90's

DAY SIXTY-ONE

countdown to Melbourne

Senna vs Prost, acrylic on paper 12x9"

After Senna's fatal accident at Imola in 94,there was a knee jerk reaction, everything was about safety, more head protection better crush zones were the way to go,grooved tyres, narrow track not.Schumacher moving to ferrari was the start of total domination and another over reaction by the FIA,so many silly changes, especially in quallifying and points system.they have re-written the rules so many times,i couldn't tell you the scoring system anymore! In the 90's i didn't do much painting too busy making model cars for drivers and teams.

70's

DAY SIXTY-NINE

countdown to OZ F1

start Nurburgring 1975 oil on panel 20x36" sold

I could fill at least a month with images of the
70's my favourite period, being a teenager at the time, these cars really got me hooked.
the readily available Ford DFV was responsible for many new constructors joining the Grand Prix circus.
There was an enormous variety of car shapes, aerodynamics where getting better
but wind tunnels were not in common use yet,so all
the cars didn't look all the same.
boxy cars curvy cars, big bluff noses, needle noses airboxes, big fat slicks at the bag,but not that much new technologie until Renault re-introduced the turbo.

60's

DAY FIFTY-EIGHT

countdown to Melbourne

Jackie Stewart BRM,acrylic on canvas 12x24" sold

Things looked completely different in the sixties,

The engine restricted and in the back, the driver lying down resulted in much lower, smaller cars.
Cigar shaped in the colors of commercial sponsorship instead of the national colors.
Wings for downforce were sprouting.
Graham Hill,Lotus acrylic on A3 paper sold

Stretched monocoques instead of the complicated tube frames, the introduction of the ford DFV towards the end ,made it easier for small constructors to set up shop.

1900's

DAY FIFTY-TWO

The first Grand Prix of the year is just round the corner!
as a preview,I will treat you with a dip into my vast archive,a countdown from 1900 till 2007
ten days for a houndred years...

One of the earliest cars I've painted,is this Napier from 1904,driven by S.F.Edge. like a big tractor and about as fast. oil on panel 18 x 30" sold

I could tell you about the city to city races, the rough, dusty roads, the many dangers...
but there are allready lots of books and web pages, written by far better writers,
suffice to say that ever since the car was invented, man wanted to race them... and some to paint them!

En Panne oil on panel 10x12" sold
Vincenzo Lancia with his Fiat breaking down during the French grand Prix in 1907.tried to paint this as the impressionists would have seen these cars.

BMW F2 782

DAY FOURTY-SIX

March BMW 782,acrylic on paper 5x8"

Continuing the BMW theme, here is Bruno Giacomelli in the BMW junior March,
this combination dominated the F2 scene in the late 70's
I grew up with these cars and love the boxy shapes with those big blunt noses.

A scoop for Hello magazine!
when i arrived in England as a model builder,i lived in the same house as Bruno and
Andrea de Cesaris,we also had the same garage fixing our crashed road cars.
