 2012 Ford Mustang
The first special edition Mustang Boss 302 was unveiled back in 1969. It was the only time the 302 was approved for production and would be the only time until 42 years later. Today, the Boss man returns in the base form of a 2011 Mustang GT. Ford is not only bringing out a Boss, but they are also revealing a special edition Boss 302 Laguna Seca model, named for the track where Parnelli Jones won the 1970 Trans-Am season opener in a Boss 302.
The new Mustang Boss 302 is powered by a 5 liter V8 engine that delivers 440 HP and 380 lb.-ft. of torque, and is mated to a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission. The cars gets revised camshafts using a more aggressive grind, a more aggressive control calibration, a Boss-specific intake system, and a retuned induction sound tube.
On the exterior, the Boss 302 will be distinguished by either a black or white roof panel and a unique fascia and grille highlighted by the blocked-off fog lamp openings and aggressive lower splitter. It will also feature a redesigned front splitter. It will be available in Competition Orange, Performance White, Kona Blue Metallic, Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat Metallic, and Race Red. On the interior, it will get a unique Boss steering wheel covered completely in Alcantara suede and Recaro buckets designed by Ford SVT in cooperation with Recaro. The Boss 302 will also have a dark metallic instrument panel finish, gauge cluster, and door panel trim.
Now that all of the technical mumbo jumbo is out of the way, we have to say how excited we are that Ford was finally able to approve a model that was good enough to be called the Boss. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait another 40 years to experience another delectable version of the classic Mustang Boss 302.

Fox Body Mustang Gets an Injection of Coyote V8 Power

There was a lot to like about Ford’s “Fox Body” Mustang of the 1980’s. Though lacking the attractive lines or brutish character of the first generation, it was a substantial aesthetic improvement over the Pinto-derived second generation ‘stang. It was also somewhat unique in pony car history for offering a 2.3 L turbo four alongside the usual assortment of V6’s and V8’s, purporting to offer the right combination of performance and economy.

So it’s no wonder the Ol’ Fox is popular with pony car enthusiasts. Now, Kurgan Motorsports of Atlanta has taken one of these semi-classics and retrofitted it with the barnstorming 5.0 L “Coyote” V8 and drivetrain from a wrecked 2011 Ford Mustang GT.

Kurgan Motorsports owner Bob Kurgan explains:

“The engine just dropped right in. It was everything else that was difficult. With this engine only being out for just a little while, everything had to be custom built for it to swap over. Getting the engine running was easy. We had to custom make the motor mounts, air conditioning brackets, power steering brackets ourselves. But it’s a friggin’ animal on the streets.”

Ford Mustang

In 1967 the first big-block Mustang was introduced, the S-code 390 which was rated at 320 hp. This Mustang was not able to compete with the hot new SS 396 Camaro , so in 1968 the 428 Cobra Jet engine was introduced, giving the Mustang true muscle car status. The Ford Mustang has past a major milestone of fourty years! April 17, 1964 is when the first classic 1964 1/2 came out into the public and heads have been turning since. Check out a chronology of events.
The Ford Mustang was introduced in 1964. The car was an instant success that set a new record for first year sales. One story describes how a truck driver drove right through a showroom window, staring and enchanted by the car.
The car was the brainchild of Lee Iaococca, who envisioned an inexpensive, sporty car for the masses. On April seventeenth, 1964 Ford unveiled the Mustang Convertible at the New York Worlds Fair. These cars and others with early production features are often referred to as 1964 1/2 model year. In 1980, the world lost a cultural icon. Steve McQueen, the star of such films as Bullitt and Le Mans, had died. Metastatic cancer had claimed the life of the King of Cool.

Still, the legacy lives on. The actor’s love of cars and motorcycles was well known. McQueen competed in many motor races including the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Baja 1000. He also owned several semi-unique vehicles including a Jaguar XKSS, a Porsche 356 Speedster and a Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. Here was a man who loved his cars almost as much as we loved his movies.
